Arabi is a census-designated place of 4,533 people on the east bank of the Mississippi in St. Bernard Parish, wedged between the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans and Chalmette. It grew up in the nineteenth century as Stockyard Landing, a name it earned honestly: an 1880s law barred slaughterhouses from inside New Orleans, so the stockyards moved just across the parish line, and remnants of the trade are still buried in the back yards of Old Arabi.
