New Orleans Elite Cabinets provides professional islands & breakfast bars in New Orleans, LA for residential and commercial properties across Greater New Orleans. Kitchen islands and breakfast bars are the piece everyone gathers around and the piece most often sized wrong, because it is the one element people specify by how it looks instead of by how the room moves. We design islands starting from clearances and traffic flow, then work outward to storage and seating.
Clearance is not negotiable and it is where most island plans come apart. You want a minimum of 36 inches of walkway around an island, 42 to 48 on any side where somebody works with an open dishwasher or oven door, and more if two cooks share the kitchen. An oversized island makes the whole room worse, and part of our job is saying so at the drawing stage rather than after the cabinets are built. Plenty of houses in this city have a long narrow kitchen where a well-designed peninsula delivers what the client wanted from an island while keeping the room walkable — a shotgun house and a 7-foot island are not going to be friends.
Seating has its own geometry. Counter-height seating at 36 inches wants a 15-inch overhang, bar-height at 42 wants 12, and a table-height extension at 30 wants 18. Skimp on the overhang and nobody's knees fit, which means the stools become decor. Any stone overhang past about 12 inches needs support, and we prefer concealed steel brackets set into the cabinet over visible wooden corbels that consume the leg room you just paid for.
Storage in an island should be planned rather than leftover. Deep drawers on heavy-rated slides for pots and pans, a dedicated trash and recycling pull-out, vertical dividers for trays and boards, and where the island backs onto a living room, shallow shelving or a bookcase end on the far side rather than a blank panel.
Two things get planned before the cabinets are drawn rather than after. First, plumbing, electrical, and ventilation if the island carries a sink or a cooktop — retrofitting a vent through a raised floor is not a small job. Second, receptacles, which code requires on an island; we put them where they are usable but not on the seating face where a cord would trail across somebody's lap, so pop-ups in the counter or receptacles set into the end panel.
Levelling deserves a mention because an island sits in the middle of the floor, where the slope in an older house is most obvious. We shim to a laser line and build the toe kick to suit, so the top is dead flat even when the floor is not.
Finish is where an island gets some personality. A contrasting colour or a second species against a quieter perimeter is the most requested treatment we do, and a well-mitred waterfall edge in the same slab still looks superb.
With 15+ years of experience, our licensed and insured team brings the right materials and equipment to every job — moisture-resistant plywood boxes, solid maple dovetail drawers, Blum and Grass soft-close hardware, full-overlay and inset doors, framed and frameless European construction, catalyzed conversion varnish — and backs the work with a written workmanship warranty. We serve New Orleans and nearby communities including Metairie, Kenner, Marrero, Terrytown.

Materials, equipment and how we do islands & breakfast bars
The difference between islands & breakfast bars that lasts and islands & breakfast bars that gets redone in three years is almost always preparation and materials, not the finish you see on day one. We work with moisture-resistant plywood boxes, solid maple dovetail drawers, Blum and Grass soft-close hardware, full-overlay and inset doors, spec them to the job instead of to the invoice, and write the material grades into the free estimate so you know exactly what you are buying.
Every New Orleans job runs the same way: site walk and measurements, written scope and fixed price, protection of the surrounding area, then the work itself with a daily clean-up. 15+ years of cabinet work in Greater New Orleans means we have already met whatever your property is going to throw at us — awkward access, older construction, an HOA with opinions.
