Chalmette is a census-designated place and the parish seat of St. Bernard Parish, downriver from New Orleans toward Lake Borgne, with 21,562 residents in 2020. It takes its name from Louis-Xavier Martin de Lino de Chalmette, whose family plantation stood here; the French word means pasture or fallow land.
In January 1815 the Battle of New Orleans was fought on that plantation, and the ground is now preserved as a national battlefield with Chalmette National Cemetery, 17.5 acres holding mostly Civil War interments, immediately adjacent. Both have been part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park since the mid-1970s. The 2000 census counted 32,069 residents.
On 29 August 2005 a storm surge came through the Mississippi River–Gulf Outlet Canal and flooded nearly the whole town, in places to fourteen or fifteen feet, and by late October most buildings had been judged unsalvageable.
