Gretna is the second-largest city in Jefferson Parish and its parish seat, with 17,814 residents in 2020, sitting on the west bank of the Mississippi directly across from uptown New Orleans. Its history runs through two settlements.
John McDonogh bought a plantation here and founded McDonoghville in 1815, subdividing it into city lots and farming strips and creating the first subdivision in the parish. Gretna proper was settled in 1836 as Mechanikham and grew around a river station serving the Texas and Pacific and Missouri Pacific railroads.
The city incorporated in 1913, absorbing the portion of McDonoghville inside the parish line. Behind the river levee the elevation is essentially zero, and the whole city fits into 3.9 square miles.
