Harahan is a small city of 9,116 people in Jefferson Parish, on the east bank between River Ridge and Elmwood. It occupies what was once the Soniat Plantation, land good enough for farming and cattle that in the late 1800s was partly used as an experimental farm run by Southern University. Development began in earnest in 1894, when the Illinois Central Railroad built a repair yard and roundhouse beside what is now city hall. In 1914 the Harahan Land Company, made up of Illinois Central officials, bought the university tract and subdivided it, and the buyers were railroad men, river workers and truck farmers. The village incorporated in 1920 and took the name of James Theodore Harahan, the railroad's president. Before the Huey P. Long Bridge was built, Harahan was one of the few places on the whole Mississippi where railcars could be moved across the river.
